Reverse Engineering: Part 3, Small Progress

 


This pocket plane lever cap is the next piece that I am attempting to recreate in Rhino. I only made a small amount of progress this week, as I modelled the outer shell using the Network Surface command three times before I settled on the shape. The material it is made from is polished stainless steel. Problems I was having at first was drawing too many curves which was confusing Rhino. Once I simplified it to six curves everything went smoothly.

These are the 3D printed models of my six chess pieces photographed on a matte black seamless background. The King is the made from three Icosahedron (20 sided) objects made from equilateral (all sides are the same size) triangles. The Queen from Dodecahedron (12 Sided) objects. The Bishop from an Octahedron (8 sided) object on a plinth. The Knight is formed from an amalgamation of the Pawn which is a tetrahedron (4 sided) object and the Bishop. These were my initial concept sketches, where I researched the standard forms and dimensions of chess sets, and board proportions given in the provided source material for the assignment. I choose the board  square size to be 2.5" (63.5mm) and scaled everything from there. Chess Set Concepts: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water: the Platonic Solids

  The first idea I had was to model the pieces after the Platonic Solids, incorporating the elemental attributes given to them by Plato, Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. Here are two of my initial sketches for the pawn and the bishop. I think for the pawn I will only use the lower half, maybe something like the bent pyramid of Sneferu. and all the other pieces will be taller as they are  more powerful. TBC..........
