3D Printed Chess Set: PLA-tonic Solids

These are the 3D printed models of my six chess pieces photographed on a matte black seamless background. The King is the made from three Icosahedron (20 sided) objects made from equilateral (all sides are the same size) triangles. The Queen from Dodecahedron (12 Sided) objects. The Bishop from an Octahedron (8 sided) object on a plinth. The Knight is formed from an amalgamation of the Pawn which is a tetrahedron (4 sided) object and the Bishop.

These were my initial concept sketches, where I researched the standard forms and dimensions of chess sets, and board proportions given in the provided source material for the assignment. I choose the board  square size to be 2.5" (63.5mm) and scaled everything from there. The surface angles for the 12 and 20 sided shapes were obtained from a UBC math website https://personal.math.ubc.ca/~cass/courses/m308-05b/projects/cchang/webpages/icosahedron.html and https://personal.math.ubc.ca/~cass/courses/m308-05b/projects/cchang/webpages/dodecahedron.html  . These shapes were created using a base form of a pentagon, and drawing other pentagons or triangles off of the base pentagons.

After speaking to several of my classmates that had 3D printed in OBDF 110, and to Bryan I refined my pieces to have less sharp edges on their plinths, and to create smoother transition on the Rook between the Cube and the plinth so the print wouldn't fail. Below are the bishop and the rook before and after peer to peer discussions, Left pieces are revised and right pieces are my original designs.

I printed my pieces in one session on four of the printers simultaneously, the King took 3hrs 15mins to print, while the Pawn only took 40mins, the queen took 2hrs and 22mins, the Knight took 1hr 11mins, the Rook took 1hr 20mins, and the Bishop took 1hr and 49mins. Here are some videos I took during the printing process.

The image below shows the six pieces together in a row, The material is white porcelain, the ground is black glass with daylight set to 40% reflecting New Hampshire clouds in this render.

This render is a solid 360 deg gradient with three point lights set with gold, light red, and light yellow as their colour filters.

The full chess set render is white porcelain pieces, black gloss paint pieces, and birch, moviengue, and olive wood chess board on a grey glass ground in sunlight.
