Assignment #1: Castle Sept.15th / 21st

Using Rhino 7 drawing tools we learned in class, I created a basic drawing of 3D shapes. I chose to use this drawing as the foundation for my castle instead of starting a new drawing, because most societies are built on the land, knowledge, and beliefs of previous societies. My 'castle' consists of a front rampart, side wall, back gated wall and several interconnected structure wings.

The high cliffs and mountains rising to the right of the castle complex acts as a barrier wall. The lower hills and open spaces to the left represent agricultural land. The structures themselves and a golden wall acts as the castles defensive barrier. The castle's curved walls and towers are of a simple shapes created using 'extrudecrv' that suggest a medieval construction. Whereas the square block buildings and a rectangular defensive wall, also created with 'extrudecrv' suggest a more modern time of construction. The style of the other buildings was drawn free form using the 'loft' command and manipulating its settings to achieve the balloon animal shaped futuristic pavilions. The resulting castle reflects the past, present and future of a society.

The commands I used in editing were; Boolean union, Boolean diference, Group, Move, Trim, Scale, Copy, Delete, Planarsrf, Rotate, Revolve, Explode, Split, Cap and the gumball function to move, scale and stretch objects.

Features in this project that I particularly like are the gold illuminated antenna balls on all of the towers tying all the sections together with a common feature. The old structures having the ball on the bottom of the antenna and the newer more futuristic structures having their golden ball on top of the antenna, suggesting time past and time in the future.

The red X shaped building created with the Loft command is a structure I like very much. A very helpful technique I started using as the structures became more complex and harder to snap to, was to make a copy away from the main model to create the structures I wished to make then move or copy them onto the main model. Shapes I used to create the structures were polylines, squares, triangles, circles, ellipses, lines, and points.

Problems I encountered were using commands that were not covered in class to create the mountains and fields outside of the castle. Using the 'pointson' command and 'rebuild' command to stretch the mountains and plains sections caused holes between the stretched 3D plain and the extruded curve walls that I had to try and fill with planer surfaces created from polylines. I also do not know how to apply textures, lighting, and images / scenes to my surfaces to make the drawing more realistic and believable.

Thankyou.

See you next class.
