Where do we find texture, surface ornamentation and decoration? Surface design plays a major role in everything humans have ever conceived and built. As does the natural world and the organisms living in it. Surface design is very prevalent in our lives, and once I started looking I noticed patterns on surfaces everywhere. Something I enjoy is the surface textures found on the dials of watches. This square pattern is machined on a metal lathe with a pantograph mechanism. Here is a link to a video of the process.
Blue machined watch dial, with a Tapisserie (Upholstered) pattern.

Clothing also features many bright fabric designs, as seen here in this yellow, green and blue plaid.
Or this Linoleum from the 1970's or 80's. I think the centre images are flowers or possibly the many heads of a Hydra, and the corners of each square are contain ladybugs or bees.
Outside around my neighbourhood I also found many textures.
Tree Bark of a 70 year old Ash tree,
Hexagonal honeycomb pattern patio bricks,
and other brick wall patterns of several types (Zig Zag, Stacked, Basket Weave, and Embossed),
and also Stone Stucco.
Architectural surfaces and textures include Stained glass,
and Arts & Crafts Tile.
Patterns I found in manufactured wood products are herring bone patterned edge grain plywood,
end grain marquetry,
and barn wood siding.
In the down town core while riding the train to school I have also noticed many interesting murals.
Mural on building at the 8th Street West C-train platform.
Mural on building at the 12th Ave and 1st Street SE.
Geometrically patterned buildings and fractured wall mural, on 10th Ave & 1st St. SE.
While compiling these images for this research I have realized that everything, including the mundane, has texture or a pattern. This is by design of the maker or by nature that creates visual interest in our world.
Thank you, for visiting, have a great week.
Murray.
