Surface Design Study: Research

Image
Where do we find texture, surface ornamentation and decoration? Surface design plays a major role in everything humans have ever conceived and built. As does the natural world and the organisms living in it. Surface design is very prevalent in our lives, and once I started looking I noticed patterns on surfaces everywhere.  Something I enjoy is the surface textures found on the dials of watches. This square pattern is machined on a metal lathe with a pantograph mechanism. Here is a link to a video of the process. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0uW37FnCLM Blue machined watch dial, with a Tapisserie (Upholstered) pattern. Clothing  also features many bright fabric designs, as seen here in this yellow, green and blue plaid.     Or this Linoleum from the 1970's or 80's. I think the centre images are flowers or possibly the many heads of a Hydra, and the corners of each square are contain ladybugs or bees. Outside around my neighbourhood I als...

Assignment #1: Castle Sept.15th / 21st

Image
Using Rhino 7 drawing tools we learned in class, I created a basic drawing of 3D shapes. I chose to use this drawing as the foundation for my castle instead of starting a new drawing, because most societies are built on the land, knowledge, and beliefs of previous societies. My 'castle' consists of a front rampart, side wall, back gated wall and several interconnected structure wings. Front Rampart Wall (Artistic) Back Gated Wall (Rendered) View from the Mountains (Shaded)  The high cliffs and mountains rising to the right of the castle complex acts as a barrier wall. The lower hills and open spaces to the left represent agricultural land. The structures themselves and a golden wall acts as the castles defensive barrier. The castle's curved walls and towers are of a simple shapes created using 'extrudecrv' that suggest a medieval construction. Whereas the square block buildings and a rectangular defensive wall, also created with 'extrudecrv' suggest a more m...

Object Design Fundamentals 210C: First Class Introduction

Hello, my Name is Murray,  I try to eliminate labels as I feel life is more about what is inside not the label on the outside. My major is Sculpture, and my minor is Jewellery and Metals. I am taking OBDF 210 as part of my minor, and because I have never had any training in 3d CAD environments. Previously I have had 3yrs of 2d Autocad training and approximately 5 years of work experience as a Draftsperson in the Engineering and Cabinetmaking professions. Looking forward to all that can be realized and created while learning to use Rhino 7. Have a good semester everyone. Murray
